Chapter 12

—When you show up with a dead body, a real friend grabs a shovel and doesn’t ask questions.—

David had always known his brother, Rafael, was unbalanced, but he’d always felt loyalty to him because of their blood relation. That had been ingrained in him by his father. Blood matters. Family matters. It’s all you have in this world.

His father was dead, and now his brother was close to it. And David cared nothing about the man in front of him dripping blood onto the dirt and grass on the field where he would take his last breath.

White clouds streaked across the bright blue sky, the peaceful day incongruous with the rage burning inside him.

On his knees, his hands bound behind his back, Rafael stared out sightlessly into the distance and David wondered if his brother was too far gone from the pain of the torture he’d inflicted. David hadn’t planned to torture him originally. No, he’d planned to have his brother assassinated and pin it on someone else. It would have been an easy way to eliminate what he knew was a threat to his power. But after hearing those tapes the CIA agent had given him, David had decided he would make an example of Rafael.

It was one thing to plan a coup, to take over. David still would have killed him for that—and because he knew his brother had killed their father—but Rafael had planned to rape his wife and kill his children. He’d been descriptive in his intentions, especially toward David’s beautiful Maja. For that, Rafael needed to suffer.

“This is what happens when you betray me.” He didn’t raise his voice, just scanned the dozen men standing in front of them. These were his closest allies, and while he didn’t doubt their loyalty, this would be a reminder to all of them and they would tell others.

Soon news would trickle down into the organization that David Ramirez had tortured and killed his own brother. If he could kill his own brother in such a way, then he could kill anyone. One day, far in the future, he wanted to be legitimate, to leave this ugly world behind. His wife and children deserved that legitimacy. Until then, he had to be ruthless, brutal.

He moved a few steps until he was standing behind his brother. He grabbed Rafael by the hair and wrenched his head back. He’d killed with his own hands before. Not as many as Rafael and only when necessary. Though he hated that it had come to this, he struck hard and slit Rafael’s throat in one clean slice. Disgust spread through him that his brother had made him do this, that things had ever come this far. If he hadn’t been such an absolute psychopath, they could have ruled together. And made a lot of money.

David kicked his brother in the back. Dust whooshed out under the impact of Rafael’s body hitting the ground. Blood pooled into the dirt, spreading even as it soaked into the ground.
